Frequently asked questions.

  • I currently accept certain Medicare plans. For all other insurance carriers, services are private pay. However, I can provide a detailed superbill upon request, which you may submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Coverage and reimbursement vary depending on your specific plan. Please contact the NBAustin scheduling office for more information.

  • Patients can self-refer and schedule an evaluation directly. However, if you would like insurance to help cover the cost, you may need an order from your doctor stating the medical necessity of the evaluation. This applies both for Medicare and for patients who plan to submit for out-of-network reimbursement.

  • The length of an evaluation depends on your referral question and individual needs. For a detailed breakdown of the intake, testing, and feedback process, please see my Services page.

  • Get a good night’s sleep before your appointment, eat a balanced meal, and take your prescribed medications as usual. Please avoid alcohol or other substances (such as marijuana/cannabis) beforehand, as these can affect your performance on testing. For more information on what to expect, click here.

  • On the day of your appointment, please bring your glasses and hearing aids if you use them. Testing sessions can be lengthy, so it’s a good idea to bring a bottle of water, a snack, and any medications you may need to take during the day. If you’ve had prior neuropsychological testing, please bring a copy of the report or arrange to have it faxed to NBAustin.

  • Medical records are often very helpful in understanding your history and current concerns. Useful records may include your most recent annual wellness visit, relevant hospitalization records/notes, neurologist notes, and neuroimaging reports such as a brain MRI or head CT.

  • Neuropsychological evaluations include three parts: intake, testing, and feedback. Depending on the type of evaluation, intake appointments may be done either in person or by Telehealth. Testing sessions must be completed in person. Feedback appointments can be scheduled either in person or via Telehealth.

  • A feedback session is typically scheduled 1–2 weeks after testing, where we will review the results together. At that time, you will usually be given a written copy of the report, which can also be faxed to your referring provider upon request.

  • A psychologist is trained to provide psychotherapy, support mental health needs, and conduct psychological testing focused on emotional or behavioral concerns. A neuropsychologist is also trained in general psychology but has additional expertise in how the brain affects thinking and behavior. This allows neuropsychologists to evaluate memory, attention, language, and problem-solving to understand how medical or neurological conditions impact daily life. Psychologists and neuropsychologists hold PsyD or PhD degrees. A psychiatrist, on the other hand, is a medical doctor who can prescribe medications to treat mental health and neurological conditions.
